WORSHIPING THE FALSE GODS
The euphoria of world cup is over ; the world has crowned the champions and press have found scapegoats. It’s a tournament that has created immortals .But the big question need to be answered .Doesn’t the world cup create legends just by performance in single tournament? To start with ask every one the best player world has ever produced .The answer would be simple; they would come up probably with either Diego Mara Dona or Pele. They tend to forget George Best ,Ian Rush, Di steffano and many more because they didn’t participate in world cup or someone like Thierry Henry because of his underachievement in world cup or Roberto Baggio who is remembered more for his penalty miss in 1994 than the one of the best goals ever scored in the world cup history in 1990.
Footballer is one who plays football. Great footballer is one who plays great football consistently .Di steffano played with grace and perfection for many years for Real Madrid helping them to four consecutive Champions League trophies and several domestic silverwares and made them the most feared club during fifties and sixties .His record of 48 champions league goals almost stood for about forty years before Raul overtook him in 2006.
Media may have forgot him, but they can’t ignore his record .They still find time and space to pour praise on Diego whose lone success outside world cup was guiding Italian club Napoli to a UEFA cup final ,only a second tier tournament to Champions league which they eventually lost .He didn’t have much success at Spain with Barcelona and Sevilla .If not for a hand ball goal and greatest goal ever scored in World Cup against England in 1986 Quarters ,most of us would not have even heard of this high profile legend .His anti American views and alignment with Fidel Castro made him a friend of media. A player suspended from a tournament for drug addiction was cast as a role model for millions of youth around the world.
