Workshipping False Gods

WORSHIPING THE FALSE GODS

The euphoria of world cup is over ; the world has crowned the champions and press have found scapegoats. It’s a tournament that has created immortals .But the big question need to be answered .Doesn’t the world cup create legends just by performance in single tournament? To start with ask every one the best player world has ever produced .The answer would be simple; they would come up probably with either Diego Mara Dona or Pele. They tend to forget George Best ,Ian Rush, Di steffano and many more because they didn’t participate in world cup or someone like Thierry Henry because of his underachievement in world cup or Roberto Baggio who is remembered more for his penalty miss in 1994 than the one of the best goals ever scored in the world cup history in 1990.

Footballer is one who plays football. Great footballer is one who plays great football consistently .Di steffano played with grace and perfection for many years for Real Madrid helping them to four consecutive Champions League trophies and several domestic silverwares and made them the most feared club during fifties and sixties .His record of 48 champions league goals almost stood for about forty years before Raul overtook him in 2006.
Media may have forgot him, but they can’t ignore his record .They still find time and space to pour praise on Diego whose lone success outside world cup was guiding Italian club Napoli to a UEFA cup final ,only a second tier tournament to Champions league which they eventually lost .He didn’t have much success at Spain with Barcelona and Sevilla .If not for a hand ball goal and greatest goal ever scored in World Cup against England in 1986 Quarters ,most of us would not have even heard of this high profile legend .His anti American views and alignment with Fidel Castro made him a friend of media. A player suspended from a tournament for drug addiction was cast as a role model for millions of youth around the world.
Think for yourself.
Forward it to any one who loves football .Issued for maintaining the integrity of the beautiful game.

Well I think you may not have heard abt the incident that took place in a bar in latin America! The drinkers were engaged in a heated argument over who the greatest ever footballer was. One side argued that it was Pele while the other said it was Di Steffano. As the debate peaked an elderly gentleman stepped in and said that he was absolutely certain that it was Pele. Everyone stared at him and some one asked him how he can be so sure that it was Pele?! He replied "Because I'm Alfredo Di Steffano". And I think that settles it [:-)]

Its always the records that do the talking. We rem hero's from the world cup's coz they are touted as the Best Tournament in the game and some cup editions do live upto that name. So when we have the world saying that World cups are where the best of the best give their best, who would take anything else into account??

For each edition we have a new hero and it's only Pele who was a hero for more than a single edition and won a World cup for his nation in the final years of his career. I think this is the lone fact that's more than enough to settle who's the best player.

As far as Maradona is considered; am sure the world will remember him for the HAND OF GOD rather than what he did five minutes later voted in 2002 as the best goal in World Cup history, in which he eluded five English outfield players as well as Shilton in the RIGHT way.

But Maradona's greatness lies in the fact that he almost single handedly inspired & lifted a team of not so extraordinary players into world beaters. Pele had almost equally gifted players like Garrincha, Didi, Vava ......the list is not ending to play along side him. How many times have we seen such players in any sport? We also have to take into consideration the tremendous pressure on playing at that level....

Certainlly the quality of soccer in WC is far inferior when compared to the European domestic trophies, and if any team got fare share of luck, they can easily progress into later stages without much of a difficulty,as Korea showed the world in 2002,but test of teams and players is the league with about 35 matches.
Even this world cup was no exception. One of the best player of the tournament was Cannavaro, who was more than instrumental in Italian sucess, now that performance earned him to a move to the Glacticos,ie Real Madrid, and later won for himself the European player of the year and Fifa palyer of the year, though in club level he didnt achive anything, with his club of the time Juventus getting relegated for match fixing.
Me being a football buff ,had followed much of Reals action as of now,and should say that ,his performance was nothing but pathetic, letting goals in like he was a school team defender,
The media was praising him like the best thing in the world, most of the casual fans might not have noticed this and might me still living in the fantacy that media created

well honestly i don't know steffano, but when we compare pele with maradona i will vote for maradona coz he was the one who led a comparitively low profile argentina team to victory.
And it was the opponents who made him a drug addict. When they saw that he was unstoppable they started fouling him and injuring him purposefully.Well he had a choice to take drugs or quit playing.he opted to play.am with Diego.

@ Sreehari.....
Injuring him?well thats a new info.....usually good players have to live with such onfield tactics by opponents.....if u make that a criterion for being an addict, then all top players of the generation Ronaldinho,Ronaldo,Kaka,Gerrad,Henry,Fabregas and all will be addicts....
and ignorance in no bliss.....just coz Dalglish,George Best or Di Steffano werent popular wth crowd...doesnt mean that they werent great......
that has been my whole point in the topic....why is it that people dont know such great players,,,,it is only coz media didnt do justice.
they made demigods....but forgot real heros.....
